The wait is over. The Wind&Waves Festival will launch this Friday, July 31, the starting signal for a new edition of the Open World Championship, Junior and Masters of the PWA/WWT, which will turn the beach of El Cabezo into El Médano (Granadilla de Abona, Tenerife), in the great international epicenter of windsurfing.
If the wind and sea conditions allow, the competition will begin with the celebration of the trials, the qualifying qualifiers that will decide which athletes will access the final team of the championship, where the main favorites of the world circuit await.
The test will bring together 71 riders from some of the countries with the greatest tradition in this sport. In total, 49 male and 22 female athletes will fight to start off on one of the most prestigious events on the international calendar on the right foot. Spain, France and Germany will provide an outstanding representation, although there will also be competitors from Japan, Brazil, Poland, the United States and other countries.
A real luxury poster
The sports level will once again be one of the great attractions of the championship. In the male category, eight of the top ten finishers in the world ranking will be present, which guarantees a first-class show on the waves of El Cabezo.
Among the great favorites, the Catalan Marc Paré, fifth-time winner of the test and currently fifth in the world ranking, stands out. Together with him, two of the great Canarian references, Liam Dunkerbeck, sixth in the ranking, and Marino Gil, one of the proper names of the national windsurfing, will compete..
The international participation will be headed by the Brazilian Marcilio Browne, second in the world ranking, and the German Philip Köster, third in the classification. The only outstanding absence will be that of the current leader of the circuit, the American Bernd Roediger, who will not be present in El Médano.
In the women’s competition, the show is equally guaranteed with the presence of the first five classified in the world ranking. The German Maria Behrens, the leader of the circuit, will lead an enormous level participation in which the French Marine Hunter, the German Lina Erpenstein, the Belgian Sol Degrieck and the Swiss Pauline Katz will also be.
They will be joined by another of the great historical protagonists of El Cabezo, the Arubense Sarah-Quita Offinga, one of the most successful windsurfers of all time and the former winner of the Tenerife test.
Inaugural parade through the streets of El Médano
Friday’s day will not only mark the start of the competition, but also the official start of the festival with the opening ceremony, which will be held from 6:00 p.m..
The participating riders will parade with the flags of their respective countries from El Cabezo Beach to El Médano Beach, on a tour that will allow residents and visitors to welcome some of the best windsurfers in the world.
This act will symbolize the international character of the Wind&Waves Festival and will serve as a meeting point for athletes, fans and neighbors before several days of top-level competition in one of the most emblematic scenarios of world windsurfing.
